Andreas too busy to go on?, 14 May. 2005 05:30

It seems that Andreas has gotten too busy this year to continue with bricks. The updates to bricks 1-5 have been much less frequent and it‘s now the 14th of the month and the new competition isn‘t posted yet? I‘m sure updating is lots of work but if you have no time Andreas, you should either call it quits or find someone to pass off the duties too.

Unfortunately I don‘t think there‘s any one else qualified to do updates either. All of the top players have had periods of non-player because they get stuck and lose interest. And they‘d have to be trusted to not immediately give away all the best solutions they worked so hard to find, but found very few of (for most people anyway).

Andreas has been doing this for at least 5 years now (I‘m not sure exactly when it began) and I do admire him for that. Bricks is a lot of fun AND frustration too.

I don‘t mean to cause a disturbance, I just wanted to get some kind of discussion going on this rather dead forum.

When I first played the game I was only 18. Now I am approaching 25... yes it has been more then 5 years since it started and I‘m sure the workload has increased a lot ... we just have to be patient P.S. This time I will have updates on Bricks III and Bricks V. And I submitted my Comp solution.

This is an important issue. In an e-mail
to AR I once volunteered to "host" one of the
comps. The idea was that Andreas could then
also participate rather than simply invest
all his spare time on hosting the show.
AR‘s polite reply was basically: "Thanks,
but no thanks."

Anyway, my suggestion is that in the interest
of sharing the workload, we might take turns
hosting the bimonthly comps, while Andreas
would continue updating the main game stats.

Any thoughts or comments?

One of the consequences would be that we
would lose the prizes. Probably very few
of us could provide a web source, where the
Kadon ads could appear (I know I couldn‘t),
and we don‘t want to introduce legal
problems like that. Then again, isn‘t the
honor of winning a competition more important
than any prize :-)

Other problems might also appear (could
I be trusted to host a comp that Sampsa
happens to win??). Seriously speaking, I
think we can work out sensible solutions
to all potential problems. A down side to
this would be the need to add even more
Bricks related bookmarks :-)

Cheers,

It‘s eight days into the new competition and it‘s still not on the main page... This isn‘t a good way to keep people interested in the game. Surely AR can either take the necessary 15 minutes to update or find someone to help?

Not to mention the old competitions not yet having its "2005" page. Now, of all the Bricks players I know, Nolan has proved never to have had any "down time" in play or participation. His enthusiasm has even led to the well known Windows version of Bricks, and his .dll‘s have never been late. If Nolan agrees, maybe Andreas could consider letting him do some of the critical web page updates (current and old competition pages, for on. So the solutions could still be kept with Andreas, who could only forward the scores to Nolan..or something like that?

Cheers

Igor

He already sends me a zip of all competition solutions and I update oldcomps with that. Except when he forgets and i have to remind him ... but didn‘t have to for circulation. Although I just remembered that I didn‘t update the zip with eckhard‘s improvement. Better do that now ;-)

It´s true it would help at least updating the competition page plus the standings so new interested people would be able to join in, it is always nice to see some new players, I agree with Igor that Nolan if possible should help Andreas or Sampsa because they are next to Ekkhart I think the most active players but I guess Nolan has the best know how and experience with computers.

Yes surely Nolan is the best of us to deal with web pages. Besides, nobody who plays more than he does wants to do it; that‘d mean he‘d have to reduce his playing time... while someone who plays a bit less still has some "spare" time to give for Bricks ;-)

Who said I wanted to do it!?

I‘ve got my own website that keeps me VERY busy: http://speeddemosarchive.com/

Unfortunately, lately it‘s been suffering thanks to stress from a crappy apartment (flat) but also because I‘m spending a lot of time with cb4 ... now 38 levels solved.
